Ordinals Wallet X Account Hacked in Phishing Attempt

Early morning saw a non-custodial Bitcoin wallet, Ordinals Wallet X, fall victim to a hacking incident when hackers infiltrated the account and began posting phishing tweets. The creator of Ordinals Wallet, Randy, took to Twitter to warn users by posting, "@ORDINALSWALLET TWITTER ACCOUNT JUST GOT PHISHED AND SUCCESSFULLY HACKED. DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING IT POSTS."

The phishing tweets claimed, "It’s finally here. The $ORDI Token is now officially live. All Ordinals Wallet users are eligible to claim a piece of $ORDI’s initial supply. Holding $ORDI will grant access to all of our future beta programs."

Security Alert: Fake Links and Compromised Accounts

One of the alarming aspects of this hacking incident was the insertion of a fake link in the phishing tweets, deceiving users into claiming non-existent tokens. This fraudulent activity serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to stay vigilant and verify the authenticity of information received through social media channels.

Increasing Trend of Phishing Attacks

Hackers frequently employ phishing tactics on social media Platforms like Twitter to execute social engineering attacks that lead to unauthorized access to accounts and the dissemination of malicious content. Reports from Web3 security firm Scam Sniffer indicate a concerning rise in phishing attacks, with approximately 10,800 victims falling prey to such schemes in September alone.

The most significant loss was recorded on September 28 when a phishing attack utilizing a deceptive permit phishing signature resulted in the unauthorized transfer of 12,083 spWETH tokens amounting to $32.43 million.

In addition to the Ordinals Wallet incident, Scam Sniffer flagged another hacking event today, revealing that hackers managed to steal $35 million worth of fwdETH tokens and subsequently liquidated them. This illicit activity triggered a substantial decline in the value of fwdETH, accentuating the financial repercussions of such security breaches.
